England Talent Struggles Under Amorim

Mainu has yet to start a single match in 15 Premier League outings this season, totaling only 183 minutes of play. This is a stark contrast to his impressive debut in 2024, which garnered attention from both his club and the national team. His limited involvement has led to significant frustration, with reports indicating that he feels “deeply disillusioned” by Amorim’s decision to limit his playing time.

While Amorim claims that Maynou “deserves to play,” his choices prioritize the experience of Casemiro and the influence of Bruno Fernandes, particularly with Maynou set to miss some time. Sources suggest that the United manager has advised Mainu to enhance his off-the-ball game, which is a primary factor in his lack of appearances. Tensions peaked when Mainu was an unused substitute during the 1-1 draw against West Ham, leading to public scrutiny from Paul Scholes regarding this decision.

Ince Encourages Maynou to Pursue a Transfer

In an interview with Covers.com, Ince stated that Mainu should consider moving to a club where he would have more opportunities to play regularly.

“If I were in Mainu’s shoes, I would seek a transfer in January,” he commented. “With the World Cup approaching, leaving Manchester United—either on loan or permanently—seems like the best route to secure a spot in the England team. When Mainu initially debuted, there was a lot of excitement surrounding him, but something seems amiss, possibly due to either him or manager Ruben Amorim. Maybe his rise came too soon, but it certainly hasn’t been easy for him since.”

Ince believes this was the year for Mainu to step up and replace the aging Casemiro.

He noted: “Given the mounting pressure Casemiro faced last season and his evident decline, I expected this to be the time for Mainu to make a name for himself in the starting lineup as a key player for Amorim. Thomas Tuchel is likely mindful of selecting English players based on their minutes at the club, but Mainu appears to be unaware of this.”

Interest Grows for Potential Napoli Move

Mainu has garnered interest from multiple clubs across Europe, with Napoli emerging as a leading contender. The Italian champions have already signed former United midfielder Scott McTominay and forward Rasmus Hjølund, further bolstering their midfield amid injury challenges.

Giovanni Manna, Napoli’s sporting director, commented on the links, stating to Sky Sports Italy: “He’s a player we’ve been linked to since August, given his age, potential, and transfer feasibility. This team is progressing well, and while some key players are absent now, they will return strong. We’ll assess situations as they develop.”

Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the rising interest in Mainu, stating: “It’s not surprising that several clubs are showing interest in Coby Mainu. For instance, Napoli is eager to sign him sooner rather than later. There are over ten clubs interested in Coby, not just Napoli, but the final decision depends on United and the timing of this situation.”

Would Napoli Be the Right Move for Mainu?

A loan to Napoli could provide Mainu with the consistent playing time he needs to rebuild his confidence, especially under the demanding guidance of coach Antonio Conte. Serie A has historically been a refuge for Manchester United players seeking revival, with examples like Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling. Now, Mainu hopes to make a similar transition.
