Manchester United are hoping to make one or two signings in January, but it is almost certain that several players will move on. One of them is expected to be Koby Mainu, who remains out of favor under coach Ruben Amorim.
Just a year and a half ago, Maynou was Man United’s crown jewel, but now he is headed for the exit door. He has been largely under the radar at Old Trafford, making zero starts in the Premier League this season and all 10 of his appearances in the competition coming off the bench.
Koby Mainu wants to leave Manchester United
According to Mick Brown (via Football Insider), Chelsea are favorites to sign Maynou, who is set to pursue a move from Man United in January.
“Mainoo will be encouraged to leave in January, I have no doubt. His treatment is insane, but Manchester United tested their interest in him over the summer, so Amorim is not the only person to blame.
“All the noise that came out of the club was that they were prepared to let him go for a fair price because of the financial situation. In the end nothing happened, but it was something they considered and the player was aware of that and it made him a bit upset. If you keep telling a player that he is not wanted by the club or the manager, he is not going to want to stay there even if he changes his mind later on.”
“Mainou works hard, is a creative player and is a good player on the ball. He is not a power man or a flying machine, but he is a very good football player. Given the fact that he continues to be left out of the squad and not even on the bench, he could be a weekly starter at many of Europe’s top clubs.”
“He knows that, he knows that he’s interested. It’s no surprise to anyone, but if the opportunity comes, he’ll want to jump on it. It was completely avoidable, but this is the situation the club have put themselves in with the way they’ve treated him since the summer window opened.”
Who should Koby Mainu join?
It will be interesting to see where Mainu ends up. Chelsea may be favorites to win, but his situation is likely to be similar to Man United’s, given that manager Enzo Maresca already has midfield options such as Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandes, Reece James, Romeo Lavia and Andrei Santos.
