NHL Buzz: Sabers’ Alex Ryan Sparks Trade Talk with Two Potential Destinations

The Buffalo Sabers currently have an abundance of goaltenders, leading to speculation that Alex Lyon might be traded. Lyon signed a two-year, $3 million deal with the Sabers during the offseason and has started well, appearing in 17 games with a 6-6-1 record, a .905 save percentage, a 2.99 goals-against average, and one shutout.

However, with other goalies like Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Kolten Ellis, and prospect Devon Levi on the roster, the Sabers might consider offers for Lyon. With that in mind, here are two teams that could realistically pursue Lyon if Buffalo decides to trade him this season.

Edmonton Oilers
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Oilers had interest in Lyon even before securing Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Although the Oilers originally drafted Jarry, they might still look to add Lyon near the trade deadline. If acquired, Lyon would significantly improve the backup position, replacing Calvin Pickard, who has struggled with an .851 save percentage across 11 games this season. This move could allow the Oilers to use Jarry and Mike Smith as their main goaltenders.

Philadelphia Flyers
A potential return of Lyon to the Flyers could be intriguing. While free agent signee Dan Blader has played well, Sam Arson has faced challenges, posting only a .870 save percentage in 11 games. Should Arson’s difficulties persist, the Flyers might be compelled to bolster their goaltending depth with someone like Lyon, especially if they remain in playoff contention as the year progresses.

Fan Take:
This trade buzz around Alex Lyon highlights the critical importance of goaltending depth for teams aiming for playoff success. For hockey fans, it will be interesting to see how these potential moves might shift team dynamics and impact the race for postseason spots.
