Mets and Yankees Emerge as Top Contenders for Michael King, Eyeing Four-Year Deal

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, Michael King is currently the most likely starting pitcher among free agents to secure a new contract soon. Feinsand mentioned that King is expected to sign a four-year deal. Teams showing interest include the Red Sox, Orioles, Cubs, and both New York franchises. This isn’t unexpected, as Greg Joyce from the New York Post recently reported that the Yankees are considering bringing King back as part of their talks with the Padres involving the Juan Soto trade. The Mets have also expressed interest in the 30-year-old, with the two sides reportedly having a video meeting ahead of last week’s winter meetings. While King carries some injury concerns, he remains an intriguing option for any pitching rotation. Hailing from Rochester, he was among baseball’s best two seasons ago, ranking seventh in the Cy Young Award voting with a 2.95 ERA and 201 strikeouts during his first full season as a starter. Last year, when he was healthy, King performed well but only appeared in 15 games due to two separate injuries.

Fan Take: This potential signing is significant because Michael King has proven his high-level talent when healthy, and securing him could provide much-needed stability to a pitching staff. For baseball fans, it signals a strategic move by teams to invest in promising pitchers who can impact games despite past injury setbacks, highlighting the ongoing balancing act between risk and reward in player acquisitions.
