This week, Saudi Arabia will host the 2025 Supercoppa Italiana, featuring the top four teams from the 2024-25 season. The tournament kicks off Thursday, with the final slated for Monday. Meanwhile, only six Serie A matches are scheduled this weekend, including Naples vs. AC Milan to begin the semi-finals, followed by Inter vs. Bologna on Friday. Here’s what you need to know about the event.

Who won last year?

Last year, AC Milan made an impressive comeback in the Supercoppa Italiana final, overcoming Inter 3-2 after a thrilling second half. Tammy Abraham scored the decisive goal in stoppage time, marking the first trophy for then-manager Sérgio Conceição just a week after he took over from Paulo Fonseca.

Team news

In major news ahead of the Supercoppa, Romelu Lukaku has been included in Napoli’s squad for the trip to Saudi Arabia under manager Antonio Conte. The striker has been recovering from a muscular injury sustained in August that sidelined him for the early part of the 2025-26 season, prompting Napoli to sign Rasmus Hojland on a $70 million loan from Manchester United. Though Lukaku may not play in the semi-final against AC Milan, his involvement indicates a return is nearing.

Additionally, Inter’s right wing-back Denzel Dumfries will undergo ankle surgery, sidelining him for at least three months, with a projected return in March. This decision, reached in agreement with the club, opens the door for the potential signing of a new winger during the winter transfer window, especially as Dumfries has a $25 million release clause effective in the summer of 2026. Mexican striker Santiago Jimenez is also set for surgery this week and will be unavailable for at least two months. Regardless of Jimenez’s situation, Milan is likely to pursue a new striker in January.

This news holds significant importance for soccer fans, highlighting the continued prestige of the Supercoppa Italiana and the opportunities for clubs to shine on a global stage. With key players potentially sidelined, it adds an element of suspense that could dramatically influence the tournament’s outcome.
