Otto Stenberg may not have scored in his NHL debut, but he caught the attention of the St. Louis Blues coaching staff with his gritty style and smart play. Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 188 pounds, Stenberg isn’t afraid to dive into tough puck battles and do whatever it takes to contribute. Though the Blues picked him 25th overall in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft based on his skills, his hard-to-measure qualities like determination and intelligence are proving to be valuable assets.

Blues coach Jim Montgomery praised Stenberg’s responsible play and puck support, noting that his intelligence helps keep the team cohesive and disciplined. Montgomery highlighted Stenberg’s good habits, defensive positioning, and smart decision-making, especially on the penalty kill. While Stenberg didn’t register any points or shots in his first game, he skated 13 minutes and 38 seconds, including some time on the penalty kill. Advanced stats showed the Blues struggled to create chances with him on the ice, but the team still secured a 1-0 win over the tough Winnipeg Jets.

Stenberg reflected positively on his debut, emphasizing that while he didn’t get on the scoresheet, he felt his all-around game was solid. He expressed confidence in his ability to contribute and hopes to earn the coaches’ trust in various situations.

Looking ahead, Stenberg is set to return to the lineup and play alongside Jake Nabors and Brayden Schenn on the second line. With the Blues facing injuries, there’s an opportunity for Stenberg to claim a steady role on the team by showing his versatility and two-way game on the wing.
