  • Manager Unai Emery wants to add attacking players

Aston Villa are carefully assessing a potential January move for Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson, with the Wales international emerging as a potential target as Unai Emery looks to strengthen his attacking options.

According to TEAMtalk, Villa have identified Johnson as a player to watch as they consider how best to refresh their frontline for the second half of the season.

The West Midlands club will be looking to make a splash in the winter transfer window as they look to maintain their momentum in domestic and European competitions.

Emery is keen to add speed, versatility and depth in a wide range of areas and Johnson’s profile fits many of the attributes of Villa’s value.

However, any potential signing will depend heavily on Tottenham’s stance, with Spurs yet to make a firm decision on the 24-year-old’s future.

Johnson’s role at Tottenham has been significantly reduced this season. Under manager Thomas Frank, he started just six Premier League games and scored just two league goals in the opening weeks of the season.

Since then, his minutes have been limited and the attacker has struggled to regain his place in the starting lineup.

TEAMtalk suggests Johnson faces an increasingly uncertain future in north London, with Spurs looking to upgrade multiple positions as part of the team’s wider evolution.

This is in sharp contrast to last season, when Johnson had a great season under former head coach Ange Postecoglou.

He was a key figure in Tottenham’s Europa League run, famously helping to end the club’s long trophy drought with a goal in the final, a moment that cemented his place in Spurs legend.

However, things have changed completely this season. Changes in tactics and increased competition have seen Johnson fall down the table, leading to speculation that leaving is an option.

Villa believe the change in circumstances does not reflect a decline in ability and believe the winger still has significant upside.

From Villa’s perspective, Johnson’s Premier League experience, age profile and adaptability across the front line make him an attractive option.

Emery has a strong track record of reinvigorating players whose careers have stagnated, and there is confidence within the club that Johnson can rediscover his best form in new surroundings.

A decision has to be made for Tottenham. Villa are expected to explore further opportunities if they are willing to sell or loan Johnson in January.
