Lakers Heed JJ Redick’s Call for Change, Surge to Victory Over Jazz

During the third quarter, when Bryce Sensabaugh hit an uncontested three-pointer, Lakers coach J.J. Redick immediately called a timeout, signaling his frustration with the team’s defense through hand gestures. The Lakers responded by tightening their defense, particularly in a crucial stretch of the fourth quarter, which helped slow down the Utah Jazz and ignite their offense. This harmony between defense and offense propelled the Lakers to a 143-135 win at the Delta Center.

The Lakers conceded 41 points in the first quarter but scored a season-high 78 by halftime. Despite allowing 57 points in the second half, they managed to score 41 points in the fourth quarter, overpowering the Jazz. LeBron James, with 28 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds, emphasized the importance of defensive stops to jump-start their offense.

Although the Lakers established a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter, the Jazz kept pressuring their defense, narrowing the lead to four points late in the game. Yet, the Lakers managed to regain control, notably with Luka Doncic’s impressive triple-double of 45 points, 14 assists, and 11 rebounds. Doncic also recorded five steals, making him only the second player in NBA history to achieve such stats since steals were officially tracked beginning in 1973-74.

Doncic shot 14-of-28 from the field, made 4-of-12 triples, and only committed one turnover in almost 40 minutes on the court. He also became the first Lakers player to score a 40-point triple-double since Magic Johnson in 1981. Doncic modestly noted that while they could have performed better, limiting turnovers was key to winning.

The Lakers faced a scare when James injured his left knee in the second quarter after a collision with Utah’s Walter Creighton Jr., but he returned to the game following some rest. The Lakers were already missing key starters Austin Reeves and Deandre Ayton due to injuries, with role player Gabe Vincent also sidelined recently, leaving them shorthanded.

Jackson Hayes stepped in at center for Ayton, and Smart replaced Reeves at guard. The Jazz were dealing with injuries too, missing star forward Lauri Markkanen, one of the NBA’s top scorers this season. Smart impressed with 17 points in the fourth quarter, including three three-pointers, while Hayes had a perfect 7-for-7 shooting night, scoring 16 points.

Redick’s halftime and third-quarter timeout defensive critiques seemed to have an effect, as the team improved their defensive effort after his messages.

Fan Take: This game highlights the resilience and depth of the Lakers, showing they can overcome adversity and injuries to secure high-scoring and hard-fought victories. Luka Doncic’s historic performance and leadership signal an exciting era for Lakers fans and add a thrilling storyline to the NBA’s evolving competitive landscape.
