WNBA Sensation Sophie Cunningham Teases Exciting Shift Into Wrestling Spotlight

WNBA star Sophie Cunningham is hinting at the possibility of stepping away from basketball. The 29-year-old guard for the Indiana Fever, who gained recognition after being traded from the Phoenix Mercury last offseason, has become one of the league’s most followed players. A former standout at the University of Missouri, Cunningham quickly embraced her role with the Fever, especially in defending top talent like Caitlin Clark, the former No. 1 overall WNBA Draft pick.

Since joining the Fever, Cunningham’s presence has grown significantly on social media, partly due to her podcast with West from “Summer House,” which has generated several viral clips. Recently, Cunningham hinted at potentially leaving basketball, possibly to try a new sport during the offseason or after retirement. Specifically, she expressed interest in entering the wrestling world, sharing her childhood love for WWE stars like John Cena, Hulk Hogan, and Kane during her podcast.

She revealed that she has been invited to join wrestling and might pursue it either after retiring from basketball or during the offseason, possibly teaming up with her co-host West Wilson. However, Wilson admitted that he wasn’t initially a fan of wrestling because he understood it was scripted, though he might be persuaded to support Cunningham if she competes in a few matches.

Fan Take: This news is exciting for WNBA fans because it shows the diverse talents and interests of players like Sophie Cunningham beyond basketball. Her potential move into wrestling could bring new visibility to the league and inspire athletes to explore alternative careers, broadening the appeal of women’s sports.
