Ipswich Town are currently in the hunt for a £50m ‘electric’ forward, with the aim of sealing a deal in the January transfer window.

Ipswich are now starting to put pressure on second-placed Middlesbrough, who are now just five points clear of their Championship rivals thanks to Saturday’s 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road.

Midway through the campaign, the Tractor Boys have been particularly impressive on the front foot, scoring 38 goals, the second most of any team in the Championship, and are well placed to challenge for promotion.

Jayden Philozine and Jack Clarke have scored 15 of those goals, with Kieran McKenna proving they already have top-level options on the wide side, but signing another winger is on the to-do list for the January transfer window, with an ambitious target now being identified.

This is according to a report from Football Insider, who say Ipswich are currently in the process of signing Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson, with the Premier League side considering sanctioning him to leave the club in the winter.

However, with Crystal Palace already interested in signing Johnson and Brentford also joining the race, a permanent deal is likely to be expensive, so there could be competition for Johnson.

In fact, recent reports suggest that the North Londoner could command a transfer fee of £50 million, which is clearly a huge amount for a Championship club, and that the Tractor Boys are interested in a January loan deal in return.

Signing ‘Electric’ Johnson would be a massive coup for Ipswich

It would be a real coup if Ipswich could sign the Welshman. He has proven he is more than good enough to play for European clubs, most famously scoring the winning goal in last season’s Europa League final against Manchester United.

Not only that, the 24-year-old was also active in the Premier League in 2024/25, scoring an impressive 11 goals and providing five assists in 33 games.

McKenna has already admitted he is a fan of the Tottenham ace, saying last season: “He’s certainly had a big impact on the Tottenham team at the moment with his directness off the ball, his movement behind the scenes, his ability to create chances and his movement to convert chances. He’s very, very good.”

The tributes didn’t stop there, with The Athletic’s Paul Taylor hailing the former Nottingham Forest player as “electric”.

However, given his talent and the fact that a number of Premier League clubs are also in the race to sign him, it seems highly unlikely that Johnson is willing to fall to the Championship.
