Sophie Cunningham Hints at WNBA Ambitions—Likely to Pursue Them After Her Playing Career Ends

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham may have plans for a career beyond basketball or something to pursue during her off-season. In July, Cunningham teamed up with West Wilson, a TV and sports personality known from the reality show “Summer House,” to launch a podcast called “Show Me Something.” The podcast features candid conversations about trending topics in the WNBA and pop culture.

On a recent episode, Cunningham revealed that WWE had approached her about a potential wrestling career. She mentioned, “They actually asked me to do it. Maybe when I retire or during the offseason, we could become a new WWE duo.”

At 29, Cunningham is recognized in the WNBA for her impressive 3-point shooting, boasting a career average of 37 percent and a personal best of 43 percent last season with the Fever. She’s also noted for her toughness on defense and has earned the nickname Indiana’s “enforcer” due to her readiness to defend teammates, especially the Fever’s 2024 No. 1 draft pick and WNBA star Caitlin Clark.

Cunningham expressed her admiration for wrestling legends like John Cena, Kane, and Hulk Hogan, recalling fond memories of watching wrestling as a child. She also mentioned amusingly how she and her sister would get so competitive in their wrestling play that their parents had to intervene.

While Wilson wasn’t as enthusiastic—explaining he always knew wrestling was scripted—he acknowledged Cena’s charm as a performer. Cunningham, however, shared how wrestling culture deeply resonated with her.

Fan Take: Sophie Cunningham’s interest in WWE highlights the dynamic and multifaceted talents of WNBA players beyond the basketball court. This crossover potential could bring new visibility to the league and demonstrate the diverse opportunities available to athletes after their playing careers.
