  • Will West Ham United sign a new left-back in January?
  • Hammers need more defensive depth

West Ham United appear to be accelerating their plans in the January transfer window, with FC Utrecht left-back Soufian El Karouani emerging as a key target to strengthen the Hammers’ defensive options.

The 25-year-old has had an excellent season in the Eredivisie and is currently attracting the attention of West Ham, with reports in the Netherlands suggesting a move could be on the horizon.

El Caruani has been outstanding for Utrecht this season, combining defensive reliability with exceptional attacking ability.

The Moroccan-born full-back has played in 29 games in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing 15 assists.

His performances have attracted attention, especially considering he is currently in the final year of his contract, making him an attractive market opportunity for clubs looking to strengthen without paying a premium.

Will West Ham United sign a new left-back in January?

Dutch broadcaster RTV Utrecht went a step further and reported that El Caruani is effectively on his way to West Ham.

After a recent match, El Caruani was asked directly about his plans for January and whether a transfer would materialize.

“It may or may not happen. In any case, I haven’t said goodbye in the dressing room yet. I haven’t said anything[about the situation].” He held the door firmly open and stopped without checking anything.

Given the current situation, it makes sense that West Ham would be interested. Under coach Nuno Espirito Santo, the club are keen to strengthen their defense, particularly at left-back.

Their defense has been giving away goals for fun this season, and their recent Premier League defeat to Manchester City showed once again that this is an area where managers and recruiters need to pay desperate attention.

Nuno’s natural options for the role are limited at the moment, with El Hadji Malik Diouf and Oliver Scarless the main alternatives.

Mr Diouf’s engagement with Senegal at AFCON further highlights the lack of depth, increasing the urgency to act in January.

Although no official confirmation has been made, momentum appears to be building.

With Utrecht facing the possibility of losing El Caruani for free in the summer, January could be their best chance to benefit.
