Barcelona were given an unexpected chance to strengthen their backline in January, with Manchester City reportedly offering the Catalan club the chance to sign Dutch defender Nathan Ake.
According to Fijages, the La Liga champions are assessing whether the move of the experienced City defender will help them address their growing defensive problems as the season reaches a decisive stage.
Ake has found it difficult to start regularly for Man City this season, mainly due to manager Josep Guardiola’s thick defensive rotation.
While the 30-year-old remains a trusted member of the team, his role has often been more of a reliable option than a first-choice starter.
Ake has appeared in 13 games in all competitions so far, with most of his minutes coming in domestic cup competitions rather than in the Premier League.
Nathan Ake offered chance to move to Barcelona
Nevertheless, his position at international level emphasizes his qualities. In fact, Ake has made more starts for the Dutch national team than he has appeared in the Premier League this season.
His versatility is a great asset. Although he is primarily a centre-back, he is also comfortable operating as a left-back and is used in a hybrid role within Guardiola’s system.
His adaptability is what makes him attractive to Barcelona, which currently lacks defensive depth.
Injuries to key players such as Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen and Jules Kounde have left Barcelona in a tight spot at the back as they compete with Real Madrid for the La Liga title.
With multiple competitions still being held, the need for experienced and reliable defenders is increasing.
Man City star will benefit from La Liga move
Ake’s contract at the Etihad Stadium runs until the summer of 2027, meaning City are under no pressure to sell him for the time being. However, the schedule could work in Barcelona’s favor.
The Spanish giants may be able to negotiate a lower price rather than pay a premium, especially if City are willing to restructure their squad and Ake seeks a more prominent role elsewhere.
From Barcelona’s point of view, a player like Ake is a low risk. The 30-year-old still has a few good years left at the top level and will also bring Champions League experience, adding leadership to a relatively young defensive unit.
Ake could emerge as a viable solution to Barcelona’s defensive concerns as they aim for domestic and European success.
