Islam Makhachev Shares Latest on Decision to Pass January Title Defense vs Emerging Challenger

Islam Makhachev claimed the UFC welterweight title with an impressive performance in November but declined to defend his championship just months later. In that same month, Makhachev made history by winning titles in two weight categories, ending Jacques Della Maddalena’s brief stint as welterweight champion. The event also showcased several thrilling victories in the 170-pound division, transforming it from one of the less exciting categories into one of the most captivating. Despite emerging from his title win unscathed, Makhachev chose not to defend his belt in the first numbered UFC event of 2026.

Following his victory over Della Maddalena, Makhachev stirred controversy by expressing his desire to defend his title against Kamaru Usman next. Usman, although considered among the greatest welterweights ever, has a recent record of one win in his last four fights. Conversely, many UFC fans regard Michael Morales as the top contender in the division, with Morales undefeated at 19-0 after a knockout win over Sean Brady. However, in January, Makhachev revealed he had rejected an offer to defend his title then, likely declining a bout against Morales.

Currently, Makhachev is expected to headline the upcoming UFC White House event, though there appear to be few viable alternatives for the main card. Potential headliners like Ilya Topria and Alex Pereira have stepped away or opted out, narrowing options for the event’s star attraction.

Fan Take: Makhachev’s refusal to immediately defend his welterweight title against top contenders keeps fans anticipating a high-stakes showdown that could redefine the division’s future. This pause builds suspense and excitement, potentially leading to one of the most memorable UFC rivalries and moments in the sport’s history.
