Daniel Cormier Willing to Battle Jon Jones with Unified Rules, But Draws a Hard Line Against Another Ex-UFC Rival

Daniel Cormier, known as “DC,” has never dismissed the notion of making a comeback, except if it involves facing only one specific opponent. The ongoing rivalry between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier remains unresolved, as recent remarks from both fighters suggest. Despite having respect for one another after their two clashes for the UFC light heavyweight title, the history between them is still very much alive. Jones recently mentioned agreeing to a charity grappling trilogy match with Cormier. Meanwhile, Cormier recently identified his biggest rival as someone he’d be willing to compete against again in a promotion featuring various former and current UFC stars.

In a recent interview with ex-teammate Josh Thomson, Daniel Cormier discussed the possibility of returning to wrestling via Real American Freestyle (RAF), which offers UFC veterans a platform to revisit their wrestling backgrounds in special attraction matches. Names like Michael Chandler have won recent RAF events, and Colby Covington is set to face Luke Rockhold on January 10th. When asked if he’d participate, Cormier said he’d wrestle the right competitor—specifically Jon Jones. When Thomson suggested Yoel Romero, fresh off an impressive win over Pat Downey at RAF 4, Cormier quickly dismissed the idea, acknowledging Romero’s talent but stating he wouldn’t wrestle him.

Daniel Cormier also shared his thoughts on the upcoming RAF event scheduled for January 10th, where Yoel Romero will go up against Bo Nickal, alongside the Covington vs. Rockhold match. Cormier predicts Rockhold will struggle against Covington but expects the Romero-Nickal bout to be much closer. He noted Nickal’s youth and relative newness to wrestling, suggesting that Romero’s experience and skill make him a tough challenge, though Nickal’s youth might be a deciding factor over time.

Cormier reminisced about Romero’s wrestling days, describing him as a difficult and unique competitor since his early career. Reflecting on their times wrestling for Cuba and the U.S., Cormier emphasized Romero’s evolution from a formidable opponent to an even more remarkable athlete today. He believes Bo Nickal might ultimately have the edge due to his younger age, which could become significant.

Fan Take: This revelation from Daniel Cormier offers fighting fans hope for thrilling matchups and a potential resurgence in top-tier wrestling clashes. The ongoing tension between Cormier and Jones keeps the UFC narrative compelling, while the RAF events highlight the blend of wrestling and MMA talent, enriching combat sports and captivating fans worldwide.
