Terrence Crawford Unveils His Most Grueling Battle – And It Wasn’t Against Canelo Alvarez

Terrence Crawford has disclosed who he considers the most challenging opponent of his boxing career following his surprising retirement announcement. In September, Crawford clinched the super middleweight championship by defeating Canelo Alvarez in one of the most significant fights of the era. Despite talks of a rematch, Crawford soon announced his retirement after losing the undisputed title.

The undefeated 38-year-old, with a remarkable 42-0 record, has fought top contenders across various weight divisions. However, he reveals that the toughest fight he ever faced was not against Canelo but against Yuriorkis Gamboa. After winning the WBO lightweight title in 2014 by defeating Ricky Burns, Crawford defended his belt against Gamboa, an Olympic gold medalist from 2004. Gamboa dominated the early rounds, but Crawford turned the tide by scoring knockdowns and ultimately winning by TKO in the ninth round. Reflecting on this, Crawford stated during a livestream with Adin Ross that Gamboa was the fiercest opponent he ever fought at 135 pounds, not Canelo.

Additionally, Crawford has made it clear he has no plans to return to the ring for a bout with Floyd Mayweather. Despite ongoing debates about who ranks higher in the GOAT conversation, Crawford emphasized that Mayweather is retired and he has no intention of fighting him.

Fan Take: Terrence Crawford naming Yuriorkis Gamboa as his toughest opponent sheds light on the depth of his skill and resilience beyond the glamorous fights against big names like Canelo. For fight fans, this admission adds a nuanced chapter to Crawford’s legacy and exemplifies the fierce challenges boxers face, making the sport all the more compelling.
