Khabib Nurmagomedov Slams UFC’s Latest ‘Political Changes,’ Calls Them Unfair

Khabib Nurmagomedov has voiced his dissatisfaction with the UFC’s recent changes in policies concerning fighter contracts and cuts. Since his retirement in 2020, several shifts have occurred within the UFC, and while Khabib is no longer competing, he remains deeply involved as a head coach, carrying on his family’s legacy. Despite having multiple fighters under his guidance currently fighting in the UFC, Khabib is unhappy with how the promotion is now handling certain fighters.

In recent developments, it’s evident that the UFC seems to favor fighters based on their fighting style and marketability, especially those who engage in trash talk. Fighters like Arman Tsarukyan have been repeatedly overlooked for title opportunities, a sign of the promotion’s apparent favoritism. Additionally, undefeated fighter Rinat Fakhreddinov recently left the organization after not receiving a contract extension. Khabib criticized this new “political” approach, especially towards fighters who avoid trash talk, expressing his disappointment at the World Sports Summit.

He elaborated, stating that many hungry fighters, especially from Dagestan, prefer to focus on their skills rather than entertainment tactics like trash talk, which the American promotion seems to prioritize. Khabib stressed that the sport should be about fighting excellence rather than showmanship for money. He also noted that many fighters from Dagestan want to emulate him and achieve greatness, yet some promotions are hesitant to sign them due to their dislike for trash talk. Khabib highlighted that many undefeated fighters have been cut by the UFC recently, calling this treatment unfair.

This criticism of promotional tactics reflects ongoing fan concerns, particularly regarding the treatment of fighters like Tsarukyan. The situation may become more prominent as the UFC expands its audience through a lucrative $7.7 billion broadcast deal with Paramount.

Fan Take: This news highlights a growing tension between the sport’s meritocratic roots and entertainment-driven business strategies, which could shape how fighters are valued and promoted in the future. Fighting fans should pay attention, as these changes might influence the opportunities and careers of talented fighters known more for their skills than their showmanship.
