Cheltenham Rings in the New Year with Unprecedented Crowd Numbers

Cheltenham Racecourse experienced a record-breaking turnout for its New Year’s Day horse racing event, attracting over 44,000 attendees for the first time. The event featured seven races and drew a crowd of 44,151, surpassing the previous New Year’s Day attendance record of 38,374 set in 2023.

This number also exceeded the 41,949 spectators who attended the 2025 Cheltenham Festival earlier in the week. Unlike the festival, which can accommodate maximum capacity due to temporary structures, the New Year’s Day event had a lower capacity since it lacks a full village setup.

A highlight of the day was the L’Erquil Hurdle race, where favorite Cabral de Maysan, ridden by Harry Skelton, won decisively by five and a half lengths over Jinko Blue. Guy Lavender, Cheltenham’s chief executive, noted that New Year gatherings have grown significantly in recent years and hitting the venue’s capacity is a remarkable accomplishment, despite the limited infrastructure compared to the March festival.

He expressed enthusiasm about starting the year with such strong attendance, including over 5,000 children, many young people, local community members, and dedicated racing fans. Lavender hopes this successful event will set a positive tone for the 2026 racing season after a fantastic Christmas period for the sport.

Fan Take: This record turnout shows the growing popularity and community enthusiasm for horse racing beyond the marquee festivals. It signals a bright future for Cheltenham and the sport overall, as new generations of fans engage with racing during key events like New Year’s Day.
