In a Thursday clash, Dylan Guenther celebrated his first career hat trick and contributed an assist, leading the Utah Mammoths to a commanding 7-2 victory over the New York Islanders. Nick Schmaltz impressed with two goals and an assist, while Clayton Keller and Mikhail Sergachev each tallied a goal along with two assists. Lawson Close and Barrett Hayton each provided two assists, and goaltender Karel Vejmerka, back after missing two games, stopped 20 shots to help the Mammoths snap their two-game losing streak.

For the Islanders, Cal Richie and Matthew Shafer found the back of the net, with Max Shabanov assisting twice. David Rittich made nine saves on 14 shots before being replaced by Marcus Hogberg early in the third period. Guenther’s second goal, a slick backhand setup from Kroos, gave Utah a 2-1 lead midway through the second period after Richie had tied the game with a wrist shot over Vejmerka’s glove.

Late in the second period, Schmaltz extended the Mammoths’ lead, and despite a four-minute high-sticking penalty against Mammoth forward Alex Kerfoot, the Islanders failed to capitalize on the power play. Utah pulled further ahead in the third period with goals from Sergachev and Keller, prompting the Islanders to switch goalies. Guenther capped his hat trick by slipping the puck between Hogberg’s legs for his 20th goal of the season. Meanwhile, Shafer scored his 10th power-play goal midway through the final period.

Next up, the Mammoths head to face the New Jersey Devils on Saturday, while the Islanders host the Toronto Maple Leafs the same day.
