No matter the result of Wednesday’s New Year’s Eve matchup between the Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers, the Oilers maintained their lead atop the Pacific Division as 2025 transitioned into 2026. Meanwhile, the Vegas Golden Knights fell to Nashville, and the Anaheim Ducks lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in overtime, securing the Oilers’ position at the top entering the new year.

However, the bad news was clear: the Oilers, who suffered a 6-2 defeat, did not perform like a team leading the division. Frustrated, Leon Draisaitl expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s effort, particularly criticizing the power play’s 0-for-6 performance. He felt the game lacked competitiveness and detail.
