Victor Wembaneyama Tweaks Knee in Spurs’ Victory Over Knicks, Assures Fans: ‘I’ll Bounce Back Fast’

Victor Wembanyama left Wednesday’s game between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs due to a hyperextended knee. Although the injury needs further assessment, Wembanyama was optimistic that he wouldn’t be out for long, if at all.

The incident happened early in the fourth quarter when the Knicks were leading 102-96. Wembanyama appeared to hyperextend his left knee after landing from a rebound, causing him to fall and require assistance. He then limped to the locker room and did not return to the game. However, with just 1 minute and 20 seconds left, he briefly came to the bench during warm-ups and stood up to cheer on his teammates.

The Spurs did not initially report any injuries, but Wembanyama later made a surprise postgame appearance at the podium to update the media. According to ESPN’s Michael C. Wright, Wembanyama confirmed his knee was hyperextended but assured fans, “I’m fine” and expressed hope to play in the next game. “I almost got back into the game, but they had to hold me back,” he added. Further tests are scheduled for Thursday.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson was cautious about the injury in his postgame comments, stating he had yet to speak with the medical staff but felt reassured seeing Wembanyama finish the game on the bench with his teammates.

Despite Wembanyama’s exit, the Spurs overcame a 6-point deficit at his departure and a 14-point deficit in the second half to win 134-132. This victory came two weeks after the Knicks beat the Spurs in the NBA Cup Finals. Julien Champagnie spearheaded the comeback with 36 points, including a franchise-record 11 three-pointers on 17 attempts, all from beyond the arc.

Wembanyama had delivered his best performance since returning on December 13 after missing 12 games with a calf strain, scoring 31 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, and blocking one shot. The Spurs are certainly hoping for a speedy recovery from his latest injury.

Fan Take: Victor Wembanyama’s injury update is crucial for basketball fans because he’s a rising star whose presence significantly impacts the game’s dynamics. His recovery timeline will be closely watched as it could influence the Spurs’ performance and the NBA season’s competitive landscape.
