Jockey Keith Asmussen resumed riding at Oak Lawn late last month as he prepares for a possible comeback during Oak Lawn’s Classic horse racing season running from January 30 to May 2, or at Sam Houston Race Park. Asmussen, who ranked as Oak Lawn’s second leading jockey for the 2023-2024 season, had been sidelined since November 8 after fracturing the right side of his pelvis in a fall at Churchill Downs. Fortunately, the injury required no surgery due to the absence of bone displacement.

Asmussen expressed that although being injured is difficult, the timing during the Oak Lawn season allowed for a less urgent recovery. Six weeks after the injury, he obtained his riding permit and began riding again, noting that things are going well and he is eager to return to racing. While no specific date has been set for his full return, Oak Lawn’s holiday racing season concludes Sunday, and Sam Houston Race Park started its season on Friday. Asmussen frequently rides horses owned by his father and trainer, Steve Asmussen, who has entries at both tracks.

Fan Take: Keith Asmussen’s return is a huge boost for horse racing enthusiasts, as he is a prominent jockey with a strong track record. His comeback signals a renewed competitiveness in upcoming races, enhancing excitement and anticipation for fans watching Oak Lawn and Sam Houston.
