Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an important update on Matthijs Tell’s future, revealing that the young Frenchman could be on his way to leave for Tottenham Hotspur in January.

Despite joining with high expectations, the 20-year-old forward is reportedly unhappy with his lack of competitive appearances under manager Thomas Frank.

Romano explained on his YouTube channel that Tell is prepared to leave North London, either on loan or permanently, if the situation does not improve soon.

The driving force behind this potential transfer is Tell’s “one dream.” That is to represent the French national team in the upcoming World Cup.

“Mathis Tell is an important talent who joined Tottenham almost a year ago in January 2025. Now what will happen? Matthias Tell has one dream and that is to play in the World Cup with the French national team. Matthias Tell wants to play, he wants to play regularly, he wants to feel important. He wants to play.”

“So the message from Matthijs Tell to Tottenham is: ‘If I can’t play here, I’m ready to go on loan. I’m (completely) ready to go.’

“Tottenham’s intention at this stage is therefore to retain players and make Matthijs Tell one of the club’s key players for the second half of the season.

“However, on the player’s side, we will be monitoring the situation closely in the coming days and weeks, because if he does not play or if he does not see the importance of regular game time, Matthijs Tell could consider leaving Tottenham in the January transfer window.”

Matisse Tell attracts interest from France

Ambitious Ligue 1 side Paris FC are reported to be leading the charge to bring Tell back to France on loan.

There is also interest in Germany, where Tell previously played for Bayern Munich, and several other Premier League clubs are also monitoring the situation.

Regarding Tel’s potential suitors, Romano continued:

“Several clubs in several countries are interested in signing him. In England he played with Bayern in Germany and in France with a possible return to Ligue 1. Paris FC, for example, are very ambitious on the market and want to sign Tell for Roa. But at this stage the message from Tottenham is clear: they have not given the green light yet.”

Matthijs Tell’s time with Tottenham so far

Matthijs Tell’s journey in the N17 began when he first joined on loan from Bayern Munich in January last year.

Showing signs of brilliance, Tottenham have activated his £30m permanent option for the summer of 2025.

However, the 2025/26 season proved to be a struggle for the versatile attacker.

Despite scoring a stunning goal in the recent 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth, Tell has struggled to feature in the starting XI and has often been used as a late substitute.

With the January transfer window now open, the conflict between the player’s World Cup ambitions and the club’s desire for squad depth is reaching breaking point.
