        • Aston Villa prepare to make £22m move to sign new Morgan Rodgers

Aston Villa have been, and still are, one of the most interesting teams this season.

Unai Emery’s side have started the season in atrocious fashion, but with less than half-way left they are third in the Premier League, third in the Europa League and through to the next round of the FA Cup.

Winning the title may not be possible, but there’s no reason to think the Villans couldn’t do what Crystal Palace did last year, so the away result against Tottenham Hotspur may have been the most important for some time.

Furthermore, Aston Villa appear to be looking to give Emery an even bigger chance of achieving something this year, and if reports are to be believed, they are looking to strengthen their squad this month and could land a deal that Morgan Rodgers would prefer.

Dream signing for Aston Villa target Rodgers

Villa fans have had much to celebrate so far this season, but when it comes to the player who cheers Villa fans up more than anyone else, it’s impossible to ignore Rodgers.

The former Middlesbrough product has been in sensational form since last season and, if anything, has made an even bigger impact on the West Midlands side this year.

If the Villains score, whether it’s a goal, an assist, or a pre-pass, it’s safe to assume the 23-year-old will be involved somewhere along the way.

With this in mind, it’s not too surprising to hear that the club is moving to sign players the mercurial midfielder would like to play with.

At least that’s according to a recent report from TEAMtalk, which claims Aston Villa are still interested in Tammy Abraham.

According to the newspaper, the Villans have already been in touch with Besiktas about a possible move and have informed Besiktas, who has him on loan this season, that they are keen to sign him.

The amount paid for the English player is not completely clear, but other reports this month suggest the Turkish side were obliged to sign him for around £11 million in the summer.

Therefore, the West Midlands outfit will likely need to rack up similar figures and compensation to the Turkish side for his parent club AS Roma to condone this move.

It could therefore be a complicated transfer to get over the line, but given Abraham’s abilities, Rodgers in particular should be in contention for the one at Villa who would undoubtedly prefer to play with him.

Why Rodgers likes playing with Abraham

The first, most obvious, and ultimately most important reason why Rodgers likes playing with Abraham is his output.

The former Chelsea star appears to have rediscovered his scoring ability at Besiktas and looks to be a real threat once again.

For example, he played in 24 matches, played a total of 1726 minutes, scored 12 goals and recorded 3 assists.

This means that the sensational No. 9 is involved in a goal on average every 1.6 games, or every 115.06 minutes, lending credence to journalist Bolarinwa Olajide’s description of him as a “beast” in front of goal.

For comparison, Ollie Watkins has scored just seven goals and provided one assist in 29 games this season, playing a total of 1,871 minutes. This means that on average he is involved in a goal every 3.62 games, or every 233.87 minutes.

Surprisingly, despite such lackluster numbers, the former Exeter City star is the Villans’ second-highest scorer behind Rodgers.

So it’s clear that the team, especially the mercurial midfielder, is in need of a proper goalscorer like Abraham to lead the line.

He helped strengthen Talisman’s goals and assist records while bringing a wealth of experience from his transcontinental days.

Finally, unlike other forwards the Villans may target, the Camberwell-born poacher has experience of playing in the Premier League since his time at Chelsea, and is already familiar with Villa Park from his 18/19 Premier League campaign.

Therefore, it shouldn’t take long for him to settle down and start working with his teammates.

After all, they should do everything they can to sign Abraham, even though he may not be the most exciting name. He looks like he’s back to near his best and would be a great teammate for Rodgers.
