The Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals have finalized a trade in which left-handed pitcher Mackenzie Gore will join the Rangers, announced on Thursday. In exchange, the Nationals will receive five prospects, including infielder Gavin Feen, the top draft pick from last summer. The other players heading to Washington are Abimelech Ortiz, Devin Fitzgerald, Alejandro Rosario, and Elemy Cabrera.
Gore, 26, earned his first All-Star selection last summer. Over parts of four MLB seasons, he has posted a 4.19 ERA and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.64, contributing an estimated six wins above replacement according to Baseball Reference. The Rangers expect Gore to improve further, noting his status as a young lefty with four above-average pitches and major league experience. Gore remains under team control through the 2027 season.
Originally selected third overall in the 2017 draft, Gore was traded to the Nationals when the team sent star outfielder Juan Soto to the San Diego Padres. That deal also brought the Nationals players like CJ Abrams, James Wood, Robert Hassell, and Jarrin Susana, plus first baseman Luke Voit (no longer with the organization).
This trade marks the first major roster move by new Nationals manager Paul Toboni. Toboni, who was acquired from the Boston Red Sox last winter, also traded reliever Jose A. Ferrer to the Mariners for former first-round pick Harry Ford. Ortiz, soon turning 24, plays first base and right field, and last year showed power with 25 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A. Fitzgerald, a 20-year-old infielder selected in the fifth round of the 2024 draft, demonstrated a strong batting line in rookie and Class A ball last season. Rosario, a 24-year-old right-handed pitcher, impressed with a 2.24 ERA and 129 strikeouts across Class A and High-A. Cabrera, a 20-year-old outfielder, played 102 games in Class A, showing speed with 43 stolen bases and solid hitting stats primarily in center field.
