World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, making his first PGA Tour appearance this season, shot a 9-under 63 in the first round of the American Express in California.

The 29-year-old has not played this year and is yet to win the American Express tournament, which carries a prize money of 1.236 million pounds ($1.656 billion).

Scheffler is one spot behind the lead in La Quinta, which is jointly held by Australia’s Min Woo Lee and America’s Pierceson Coody.

He is tied with a number of players including Scotland’s Robert McIntyre and former PGA Champion Jason Day at 9 under par.

Unusually, field play spanned three different courses before Saturday’s cut.

Scheffler birdied five of the first six holes, and Coody shot a 29 on the back nine for consecutive birdies.
