Manchester United appear to have missed out on one of their midfield transfer targets as James Garner has penned a new contract with Everton.
The news was revealed on Everton’s official website, with Garner seemingly ignoring interest from his former club Man United.
According to reports including the Daily Mail, United will keep an eye on Garner in the summer as his previous contract with the Toffees was nearing the end of his contract.
However, the Mail says Everton will do everything in their power to keep Garner and sign him to a new contract, which they have now succeeded in doing.
James Garner speaks after signing new Everton contract
Garner revealed on the club’s official website how delighted he is to sign a new contract.
“I’m really excited to commit my future to Everton,” said the 24-year-old.
“We are so grateful for all the support and love we have received over the past three and a half years, but this is just the beginning.
“I have seen the progress we have made recently and now I want to be part of that progress and get the club back to where it should be.
“I feel like I am part of the club now and I hope to be part of the club for a long time to come.
“Everyone in my family is Evertonian, so I know the passion and, as I said, exactly what it means to play for such a huge football club.”
Man United miss out on James Garner’s return on transfer
Garner was on United’s books as a young player, but only made seven first-team appearances for the Red Devils in total before being transferred.
The England Under-21 international has since rebuilt his career and become a key player for Everton.
MUFC are looking to rebuild their midfield and could have brought Garner back if possible, but they will now need to consider other options as he looks set to stay at Everton for the long term.
