Justin Gaethje secured his second UFC interim lightweight championship at UFC 324. Prior to the event, he issued an ultimatum to the promotion, stating he would retire if his next fight wasn’t for a title. With the interim belt established, “The Highlight” candidly addressed the possibility that his January 24th bout might be his final appearance in the Octagon. However, by defeating Paddy Pimblett on Saturday, Gaethje demonstrated that perhaps one of the most electrifying fighters in UFC history still has much to offer. He even admitted to being surprised by his own performance in what became another memorable chapter in his long list of hard-fought battles.

While Gaethje’s coaches had doubted Paddy Pimblett’s potential, Gaethje himself was impressed by Pimblett’s resilience during the fight. Despite enduring significant punishment from one of the division’s most formidable strikers, Pimblett showed remarkable toughness—so much so that commentator Joe Rogan joked Pimblett’s chin ought to be “scientifically studied.” Gaethje reflected on his preparation, explaining that although his coaches downplayed Pimblett, he approached the fight expecting to face the toughest opponent of his career. Ultimately, Gaethje acknowledged being pleasantly surprised by his own effectiveness in the match.

Although Pimblett suffered his first UFC defeat, he earned respect for his determination and tenacity, qualities that resonated strongly with fans and analysts alike. Gaethje, with his extensive experience battling elite competition, understands the pressures of the sport well. During a post-fight interview, he praised Pimblett’s character and potential, noting, “He’s everything a UFC fighter is. I was exactly where he was a while ago. This is just a crazy sport.”
