USWNT Dominates Paraguay 6-0: Trinity Rodman Shines, Allie Sentner Nets a Brace!

Trinity Rodman, who recently joined the Washington Spirit, was instrumental in the United States’ 6-0 victory over Paraguay on Saturday, scoring a goal while the team netted five in the second half. Allie Sentner contributed with two goals, and Rylin Turner, in her debut for the national team, also scored, along with Emma Sears.

Turner’s goal came just before halftime from a pass by her Portland Thorns teammate, Olivia Moultrie. Sentner extended the U.S. lead to 2-0 early in the second half. Following an own goal in the 53rd minute, Rodman celebrated his twelfth international goal—with a dance in front of the U.S. bench—after being named captain for the day. Sentner scored again shortly after, as the U.S. found the net three times in a quick span of just four minutes, culminating with Sears’ goal in the 72nd minute.

Rodman reflected on the first half, noting nerves and overthinking among the players: “We were really rushing… almost too much space.” This match marked the first of two for Team USA to conclude its January training camp, with a game against Chile set for Tuesday night. Notably, players based in Europe were absent as their seasons are ongoing, and Gotham players were also removed from the roster to focus on the Women’s Champions Cup in London next week. Those in the starting lineup Saturday had minimal experience, averaging just ten caps for the national team. Coach Emma Hayes acknowledged the inexperience but praised the team for their performance.

Before the match, the team paid tribute to retired forward Kristen Press, who enjoyed a remarkable career with the national team, earning two Women’s World Cup titles and a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Having played 155 matches over ten years, Press was a key figure in the push for equal pay and better conditions in the NWSL.

In off-field news, Rodman secured a three-year contract with the Washington Spirit on Thursday, ending months of speculation about her future in the league. As debates continue regarding the NWSL’s salary cap and its impact on player retention, Rodman’s contract was hailed as “one of the most significant in NWSL history,” with promises that it could strengthen the league’s appeal to top talent.

Hayes expressed satisfaction at Rodman’s commitment, stating her happiness was a priority for the national team.

Fan Take: This news is crucial for soccer fans as it signals the continued growth and stability of the NWSL, making it more competitive by retaining star players. Rodman’s re-signing not only energizes the league but also reinforces the importance of investing in homegrown talent for the future of U.S. soccer.
