Eight MLB Stars Set to Represent Japan in the 2026 World Baseball Classic

Shohei Ohtani’s unforgettable strikeout of Team USA’s Mike Trout during the thrilling final of the 2023 World Baseball Classic helped Team Japan claim their third title in five tournaments. Now, as preparations are underway for the 2026 WBC, Ohtani and Japan are set to defend their crown in a 20-team competition that includes a strong Team USA seeking redemption. Notable American players include Yankees star Aaron Judge, Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber, and Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal.

The 2026 World Baseball Classic is scheduled from March 5th to 17th, with 20 teams split into four pools. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the quarterfinals. Pool A games take place at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Pool B at Daikin Park in Houston; Pool C at Tokyo Dome in Japan; and Pool D at LoanDepot Park in Miami, which will also host the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final.

Japan’s roster features eight MLB players, including reigning star Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who recently confirmed his participation. He joins teammates Shohei Ohtani, Yusei Kikuchi (Angels), Seiya Suzuki (Cubs), Hiroki Matsui (Padres), Munetaka Murakami (White Sox), Kazuma Okamoto (Blue Jays), and free agent Tomoyuki Kanno. Notably absent is pitcher Aki Sasaki, while Suzuki makes his WBC debut following his Olympic gold medal success.

Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve will not play for Venezuela after being asked to sit out by his team due to a hand injury sustained during the 2023 Classic, which hampered his 2024 season. Despite missing the tournament, Altuve finished 2024 with a .265 batting average, 26 home runs, and 77 RBIs through 155 games.

Fans can now purchase hats representing all 20 teams participating in the Classic. One of the exciting additions to Team USA is three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw, making his WBC debut despite recently retiring from an 18-year MLB career with the .

Alex Bregman is also set to join Team USA, marking his debut before starting with the Cubs. He is currently the only confirmed third baseman for the American squad, arriving after signing a lucrative five-year contract with the North Siders.

Mexico has named Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk as team captain. Kirk leads a star-studded roster that includes Jalen Duran, Randy Arozarena, and Jonathan Aranda. The 27-year-old catcher is in his second All-Star season and was instrumental in the Blue Jays reaching the World Series.

Ernie Clement will represent Team USA in the tournament. The infielder was a significant contributor to the Blue Jays’ postseason success, setting a record with 30 hits and boasting a .411 batting average during the playoffs.

Byron Buxton, enjoying a career-best season with the Twins, will also be part of Team USA. The 32-year-old outfielder recorded 35 home runs, 83 RBIs, and 97 runs scored, earning his first Silver Slugger Award.

On the flip side, first baseman Freddie Freeman has reportedly withdrawn from Team Canada’s roster, leaving the team without its star hitter. Mariners slugger Josh Naylor will take over the first base role. Additionally, Angels relief pitcher Jordan Romano will not participate, while Cubs pitcher Jameson Taillon is expected to play.

Phillies slugger Bryce Harper will make his first WBC appearance for Team USA after missing the 2023 event due to surgery. Harper hit 27 home runs with an .844 OPS in the 2025 season, helping Philadelphia to win the National League East.

Ohtani confirmed on social media he will again represent Japan in the 2026 WBC. Having been named MVP of the last tournament and remembered for his clutch strikeout against Mike Trout, Ohtani’s return boosts Japan’s chances of back-to-back championships. He also recently earned his fourth MVP award and played a key role in the ’ second straight World Series win.
