MLB Power Rankings: Which NL Central Division Team Reigns Supreme After the Toughest Break?

At one point this season, the Chicago Cubs held one of the largest leads in the National League Central, reaching 6½ games ahead on June 17th. Although the Cubs haven’t played recently and are still on pace to win 97 games, their lead has evaporated, and now they are tied with the Milwaukee Brewers for first place. Both teams have the second-best record in baseball, trailing the Detroit Tigers by just half a game. The Cubs boast the best run differential in the league, had a four-game winning streak before a recent loss, but couldn’t overtake the Brewers who have been on an impressive 10-game winning streak. While the Brewers dominated, including sweeping the six times in the past two weeks, the Cubs have held strong against top competition, facing one of the toughest remaining schedules in baseball.

The NL Central is emerging as arguably the strongest division in baseball, boasting two of the best records in the majors. Beyond the Cubs and Brewers, other teams like the Cardinals and Reds also remain competitive, both with winning records and close to wild card contention. The AL East is another strong division but lacks the run differential edge the Central has, indicating the Central’s top teams are higher quality overall. The Pirates, however, continue to struggle and act as a drag on the division’s overall strength, a disappointing trend for the franchise given its historical significance. Nonetheless, the other Central teams are thriving, including the two best teams in baseball currently.

In the latest power rankings, the Brewers lead at 59-40, fueled by their 10-game winning streak, while the Cubs are right behind at 59-40 with the easiest remaining schedule. The Tigers, Blue Jays, , Yankees, Astros, and other teams follow closely behind, each with their own recent highlights and challenges. Notably, the are struggling, losing 10 of their last 12 games, and the Astros have cooled off after a strong start. Other teams like the Phillies, Mets, Padres, and Red Sox also feature in these rankings with varying degrees of playoff hopefuls and rebuilds underway. The bottom of the rankings includes struggling teams like the Pirates and Rockies, who are far from postseason contention.

Fan Take: This tight NL Central race is showcasing the resilience and depth of the division, promising an exciting playoff chase that will captivate fans. The Brewers’ surge and the Cubs’ consistency underline how competitive baseball’s landscape is, making every game crucial and pushing teams to raise their level for a shot at the championship.
