MLB Buzz: Harrison Bader Joins National League West with Exciting 2-Year Contract

With spring training just weeks away, most offseason moves in Major League Baseball are close to being finalized. However, a few matters remain unsettled, including free agents like Framber Valdez, Eugenio Suarez, and Zac Gallen still searching for housing. Additionally, there could still be a few trades on the horizon. Stay updated with all the latest news and rumors this Monday.

The San Francisco Giants have reached a deal with free agent outfielder Harrison Bader on a two-year contract, as reported by The Athletic. The New York Post notes the deal is valued at $20.5 million, potentially climbing to $21 million with incentives.

Last season, 31-year-old Bader appeared in 146 games between the Minnesota Twins (96 games) and Philadelphia Phillies (50 games), boasting a .277 batting average and solid stats including 24 doubles, 17 home runs, 54 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, and a 3.9 WAR. Known for his stellar defense in center field—a key attribute in the large confines of Oracle Park—Bader’s offensive numbers were commendable as well.

Given the Giants’ current roster setup, Bader is likely to take over as the everyday center fielder, moving Jung-Hoo Lee to right field. This shift should improve the team’s outfield coverage, addressing the shortcomings they experienced with Lee patrolling center field last season.

Fan Take: Landing Harrison Bader is a smart move for the Giants as it strengthens both their defense and offensive potential in the outfield, which could be pivotal in close divisional races. For baseball fans, this signing highlights the continued importance of versatile players who can make an impact on both sides of the ball in today’s game.
