Is Liverpool’s Leadership Strategizing for a Future with Xabi Alonso at the Helm?

  • Alonso poised for a return to Anfield
  • Liverpool is already eyeing targets for Alonso

While Arne Slott enjoyed a fairy tale start at Anfield last season, he now faces intense scrutiny during his current tenure.

The former Feyenoord manager has anticipated securing his 20th domestic title in 2026, but is also grappling with a public dispute involving star player and Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah.

After a devastating 3-2 loss to Bournemouth, Slott’s team has slipped out of the Champions League qualifying spots.

Despite having guided Liverpool to Premier League glory not long ago, some supporters at Anfield have voiced their discontent.

Although Slott received backing over the summer with the signings of Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, the 47-year-old has struggled to maximize the potential of his star-studded roster this season.

In the wake of Xabi Alonso’s unexpected departure from Real Madrid earlier this month, there has been significant speculation about a possible return to Anfield for the former Liverpool midfielder.

Alonso’s name has surfaced as a potential successor to Slott, and it’s reported that Liverpool’s leadership is already strategizing for a future under him.

Alonso poised for a return to Anfield

When Alonso was appointed as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor at the Bernabéu last summer, it sparked excitement in Madrid; however, his time there was met with limitations.

Despite a notable victory against Bayern Munich and bringing Bayer Leverkusen success in the Bundesliga, Alonso couldn’t find his rhythm during his return to Spain.

His tenure ended abruptly after losing to Barcelona in the Super Cup, just eight months into his role. Nevertheless, reports suggest that Alonso remains keen on a dramatic return to Liverpool.

While Alonso may wish to take a break before starting anew this summer, sources indicate he is prepared to step in should Slott depart.

Although his recent experience at Madrid didn’t meet expectations, Alonso’s reputation doesn’t seem to have been significantly damaged.

Liverpool is already eyeing targets for Alonso

While Slott still holds his position at Anfield after leading Liverpool to a historic 20th domestic title, TEAMtalk recently reported that the club’s management is already strategizing for Alonso’s possible arrival.

Despite a record-breaking £450m spend last summer, the high-profile new additions have not made a significant difference.

With Isak on the sidelines after a serious injury, and former Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkes underperforming, there’s concern over the effectiveness of the squad.

As France defender Ibrahima Konate approaches the end of his contract, Alonso reportedly aims to “free up funds” for the upcoming summer transfer window.

In addition to speculation about a potential move for Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven, other targets reportedly include Michael Oliseh from Bayern Munich, Bradley Barcola from PSG, and Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton.

Editorial Opinion: This news is significant for soccer fans as it highlights the volatile nature of managerial positions at top clubs, reflecting the high stakes involved in both performance and public relations. The potential return of Xabi Alonso could reshape Liverpool’s future trajectory, invigorating the team and reigniting fan enthusiasm.
