Avalanche’s Scoring Struggles Continue as Senators Rally to a 5-2 Victory

The Colorado Avalanche faced off against the Ottawa Senators for their second encounter of the season, but the game didn’t unfold as smoothly as their previous 8-2 victory. The Avalanche struggled throughout, outshot and outplayed, culminating in a 5-2 defeat. Early in the game, Sam Malinsky attempted to clear the puck but accidentally shot it onto the glass, leading to a delay of game penalty. Despite this, the Avalanche’s penalty kill managed to hold off the Senators, and after 10 minutes, Ottawa held a slight shot lead of 6-2, highlighting both their competitive effort and the Avalanche’s sluggish start.

The Avalanche’s puck control was underwhelming, leading to numerous turnovers and enabling the Senators to establish offensive zones easily. Taylor Makar was assessed a hooking penalty, but the team’s penalty-killing unit kept the score tied going into the first intermission. Nick Cousins then capitalized on a break behind the Avalanche defense, receiving a precise pass from Artem Zub and scoring with a backhand shot. A concerning moment occurred when Martin Necas collided with Zub, missing a check and falling awkwardly onto the ice; he was able to return to the game after a brief stint down the tunnel.

Later, Artturi Lehkonen was penalized for hooking, but Ottawa couldn’t take advantage of the power play. Goalie Mackenzie Blackwood made a crucial save against Brady Tkachuk during a slot shot, and it was the Avalanche’s penalty kill that kept the game within reach for much of the night. Parker Kelly then scored on a loose puck opportunity to tie the game at 1-1, equaling his career-high points total with his 11th goal.

Shortly after, Ridley Greig received a passing outlet from Tyler Kleven and beat Avalanche defenseman Keaton Middleton, giving Ottawa a 2-1 lead. Blackwood’s positioning appeared inconsistent on this goal, and his quick decision-making issue was evident. By the end of the second period, Colorado’s shots on goal were at a season-low of eight, a stark contrast to their previous lows last season.

In the third, Claude Giroux scored from a corner shot, pushing Ottawa ahead 3-1. Valeri Nichushkin responded for Colorado with a clever shot, making it 3-2, after a smart move by Jack Drury that set him up. Despite more effort, the Avalanche struggled to control the puck and generate offensive opportunities. Blackwood was pulled twice in the game, but the Senators, led by Tkachuk and Stutzle, finished victorious with final scores of 4-2 and then 5-2.

The Avalanche are set to wear Quebec Nordiques jerseys tomorrow (January 29) against the Montreal Canadiens, continuing their season.

Fan Take: This game highlights the Avalanche’s ongoing struggle with consistency and puck management, which could impact their playoff aspirations. For hockey fans, it’s a reminder of how critical every shift and decision is, and it raises questions about the team’s ability to bounce back in future matchups.
