Bayern Munich centre-back Dayot Upamecano has reportedly approved a new contract with the club despite his links with Liverpool and other clubs.
The France international is in the final year of his contract with Bayern and there has been much speculation about his future.
However, manager Fabrizio Romano has written to X to end speculation, saying Upamecano will stay and sign a new contract at the Allianz Arena.
See below for more information…
Romano posted: “Dayot Upamecano approves new contract with Bayern, informing interested clubs! He will soon sign a new contract with FC Bayern. We are delighted that this is a big boost for the club after a huge effort on the part of the club and the player.” It is valid until 2030. ”
Dayot Upamecano’s decision could be a blow to Liverpool
We previously reported that Liverpool were interested in Upamecano, and Christian Falk also reported in one of our columns here, but it looks like the Reds will now miss out on the 27-year-old.
This is by no means ideal for LFC, who are in need of a major overhaul in defence, with Ibrahima Konate nearing the end of his contract at Anfield.
Virgil van Dijk, on the other hand, is not getting any younger, so a talented player like Upamecano may need to come in soon to become the new key player in Arne Slott’s backline.
However, Bayern fans will be happy because Upamecano can put speculation behind him and focus on getting back to his best.
Liverpool defender substitutes
It will be interesting to see who else Liverpool sign, but one of the most likely names is Rennes youngster Jeremy Jacquet.
The Athletic claim that Liverpool are closing in on a talented young French player who could join in the summer.
Still, Liverpool could definitely see at least one new centre-back arrive in the near future.
