Liverpool are moving forward with plans to replace struggling manager Arne Slott after a disappointing season.
Slott spent huge sums on new signings last summer and has struggled to keep the club competitive at the top level.
Since October, Liverpool have struggled to keep pace with Arsenal and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
Although they had an impressive performance in the Champions League, they were unable to make a similar impact in the Premier League.
The signings of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and others have so far not fully lived up to expectations, with the possible exception of Hugo Ekitike.
Liverpool list Alonso as management target
Fichajes said that although nothing has been decided at the moment, the Reds are interested in appointing Spanish manager Xabi Alonso as the club’s next leader.
Alonso was recently sacked by Real Madrid and despite a tough life in Spain, he is still highly praised for his impressive work at Bayer Leverkusen, which ended Bayern Munich’s dominance.
The young manager had won praise for his style of play and tactics, and Liverpool’s hierarchy decided to target the former Liverpool midfielder.
The Reds face Premier League rivals Man City
However, it won’t be easy for the Reds as Manchester City are expected to be in the race to appoint Alonso as Pep Guardiola’s replacement.
Guardiola’s future at the Etihad Stadium is uncertain, with reports claiming he is on Man City’s shortlist to replace the legendary manager.
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has praised Alonso in the past, calling him “exceptional”.
Alonso knows the club very well, knows the emotions of the fans and the type of football they want to see at the club.
He would be the ideal replacement for the club’s slot and the Anfield players will respect him due to his past success with the club as a player.
