Red Wings remain in the Artemi Panarin race as midweek trade talks loom

As the NHL trade deadline nears, the Detroit Red Wings are emerging as the leading candidate to acquire Artemi Panarin from the New York Rangers, according to sources. The Russian winger, who has consistently surpassed his points per game in most seasons, is reportedly contemplating a trade before the March 6 deadline, potentially including a new contract extension. Several media outlets, such as TSN’s Chris Johnston, suggest a deal could be struck as soon as Wednesday, before the Olympic trade embargo takes effect.

This season has kept Panarin in the spotlight after Rangers management announced they wouldn’t be re-signing him. Rumors about potential destinations have circulated for weeks, but Johnston observed that speculation is intensifying as New York weighs its options.

Sportsnet’s Elliott Friedman listed the leading teams pursuing Panarin as the Washington Capitals, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, and Detroit Red Wings. Friedman noted that Panarin’s desired salary could be around $50 million, with some teams considering a short-term, lucrative deal, while others might emulate Brad Marchand’s six-year, $31.5 million contract with Florida. The Panthers have remained interested partly due to Panarin’s close friendship with goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky.

Detroit is particularly attractive among the suitors because of its greater cap space, promising prospects, and valuable draft capital—assets that could appeal to the Rangers. Panarin could slot directly into Detroit’s top line beside Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond, providing an immediate upgrade for a team eager to accelerate its rebuilding process. Additionally, the Red Wings have relatively few long-term contracts, aside from key re-signings like Simon Edvinsson, making a significant salary commitment more feasible.

That said, there are risks involved. At 34, Panarin is having a productive season with 19 goals and 38 assists for 57 points in 52 games, but a lengthy extension could be risky if his performance declines in the coming years.

For Detroit, the question isn’t just about acquiring Panarin but whether they will make daring moves now that might shorten their path to contention. A deal could be finalized as soon as Wednesday, and fans might soon see the star winger wearing the iconic winged wheel.

Fan Take: This potential trade is exciting because it signals Detroit’s bold intentions to contend sooner rather than later. For hockey fans, it’s a reminder that the trade deadline can dramatically reshape teams’ futures and heighten the sport’s excitement.
