William Nylander steals the spotlight in Maple Leafs’ thrilling victory against the Flames

The Toronto Maple Leafs have achieved back-to-back wins for the first time in nearly a month. Although their performance wasn’t their best—especially when Calgary Flames narrowed the gap to just one goal in the second period—the Maple Leafs managed to hold steady and secure a 4-2 victory, marking their season’s second win over Calgary. This win also ended a long streak without a regulation victory, dating back to January 10th.

Key standout was William Nylander, whose return from injury revitalized the team. Goalie Joseph Woll stepped up impressively when needed, and the defense held firm despite Morgan Rielly’s absence due to an upper-body injury sustained earlier. With this win, Toronto moved seven points ahead of the Boston Bruins for the last wild-card playoff spot, and they face the Edmonton Oilers in their next game before the break.

Focusing on the game against Calgary, Nylander was clearly the star. Returning after re-injuring his groin and missing seven games, he showed flashes of his top form. Although he didn’t score immediately upon his return, his presence was felt, especially considering his previous streak of 11 games with points against Calgary—his hometown—and now extending that to 12.

In the first period, John Tavares set up Nylander on a breakaway, with Nylander confidently netting his 18th goal of the season. Early in the second period, Nylander was quick to strip the puck behind Calgary’s net, leading to a goal from Matthias Macelli, giving Toronto a 2-0 lead. Nylander kept the pressure, assisting Troy Stecher on a scoring chance and hitting the post in the third period, finishing the game with a highly active and impactful game.

Despite his offensive performance, Nylander might need rest soon, especially after the intense third period. For the Maple Leafs’ goaltender, Joseph Woll, this game was also significant; he’s been starting frequently—13 of the last 17 games—showing he’s a reliable option, with 28 saves in the match.

Calgary’s goals came from Nazem Kadri, a former Maple Leaf, who scored twice—once beating Woll upstairs, and later on a rebound that hit a skate and resulted in a goal for Toronto. Woll made several crucial saves in the third period, including a tense moment when a puck bounced unpredictably near the net. Overall, Woll stopped 28 of 30 shots, earning his 13th win of the season.

Other contributors included Bobby McMann, who scored his 18th goal at an opportune moment, moving closer to his career highs. Defenseman Troy Stecher continued to excel, recording a goal and logging over 20 minutes of ice time. Forward Easton Cowan might be available for the upcoming game against Edmonton, offering fresh energy and testing the team against top-tier opponents.

Fan Take: This win signals resilience and progress for the Maple Leafs, boosting their playoff push and showcasing Nylander’s return to form. For hockey fans, it’s exciting to see a team rally together in challenging times—this could be a turning point in the Leafs’ season and a sign of bigger things to come.
