Arne Slott questions Liverpool star’s future over concerning comments

Liverpool head coach Arne Slott has addressed the club’s inevitable future without captain Virgil van Dijk, insisting that while defenders remain important, the hierarchy is already preparing for the transition.

Ahead of the crucial game against Manchester City, Slott insisted Liverpool’s recruitment strategy was based on long-term stability, rather than after-the-fact “panic”.

The comments came after the Reds secured a €60 million deal for Rennes’ 20-year-old sensation Jeremy Jacquet, who is widely seen as the Dutch giants’ long-term successor.

Slott spoke frankly about the reality of aging star players, pointing out that Van Dijk’s current contract runs until June 2027, but the club need to look ahead.

Speaking to the media ahead of the game against City (via BBC Sport), he said: “What’s been done here is never out of panic, it’s always long-term ideas or things that have been thought about for a long time and not just by one person.

“Obviously, we’re aware of the fact that Virgil won’t play for another 10 years, but he has another year and a half left on his contract so he’ll be with us for that long and probably even longer if he continues to stay as healthy as he is now.

“What a compliment it is to play every three days at this age, not just for our club, but for his country for seven or eight months already.

“Hopefully he can maintain his form for many years to come, but this club is not stupid. We know that somewhere in the next few years there is life at this club after Virgil.”

“You are talking about Virgil, but this is true for any position. This club is thinking not only about the short-term future, but also about the medium- and long-term future.”

Van Dijk is a great servant to Liverpool

Since arriving from Southampton for £75m in 2018, Virgil van Dijk has been at the heart of Liverpool’s most successful period in their modern history.

His influence in leading the team to Premier League and Champions League titles continues to be enormous.

Even at age 34, his stats remain elite. This season he has won more aerial duels (119) than any other defender in the Premier League.

Van Dijk can play at an elite level for a few more years.

Despite the club signing young reinforcements such as Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni, Van Dijk’s fitness proves he can continue to play at the top level for a few more years.

The manager suggested there was a good chance he could extend his contract beyond 2027 as long as his fitness levels are maintained.

With his leadership in the dressing room and unparalleled reading of the game, Van Dijk remains the gold standard.

While the club is building wisely for its medium- and long-term future, its immediate priorities remain centered on the man who has redefined Liverpool’s defence.
