Sophie Cunningham Launches Bold Critique Against WNBA State

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was outspoken about the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the WNBA this week. On Monday, the league and the players’ union held several hours of talks regarding a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Although the 2026 season is set to start in May, there is no assurance that a deal will be reached by then.

According to ESPN’s Alexa Philippou, a source close to the situation revealed some disappointment from the players because the league had not yet responded to the union’s proposal submitted back in late December. The source added that Monday’s meeting brought hope that the league now recognizes it’s time to reply.

During a recent episode of the podcast “Show Me Something,” Cunningham shared her thoughts on the CBA discussions. She told Outkick, “We had a big meeting this week, but there’s been no progress yet. Both sides are frustrated, but as players, we’re standing firm, so this should be an interesting battle.” She also stressed, “Ultimately, the outcome depends on whether players get what they want. We’ll come out on top, with all the best talent on our side, which will boost ticket sales. Everything will be fine.”

However, Cunningham remained blunt about the negative atmosphere, saying, “The negotiations are going poorly. It feels like we’re the joke of the sports world.”

She also criticized WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert directly, pointing out the lack of communication despite no agreement being in place. Cunningham noted, “She can still speak out on social media about her support for the league. That would feel better than silence and ignoring what’s happening.”

This is not the first time Cunningham has publicly criticized WNBA leadership. Back in October, she openly called out Engelbert and others in charge, expressing frustration: “I’m tired of our league. Our leadership — top to bottom — needs to be held accountable. Many people in power might be good businesspeople, but they don’t know basketball. That has to change.”

Clearly, Cunningham’s opinions on the commissioner and league management have not softened with time.

Fan Take: Sophie Cunningham’s candid remarks highlight the ongoing tension between players and league officials, which could heavily impact the start and success of the upcoming season. For WNBA fans, this standoff is worrying because it threatens the sport’s momentum and the growth of one of the most exciting women’s basketball leagues in the world.
