Top NBA Buyout Candidates: Khris Middleton, Mike Conley, Lonzo Ball Among Key Names to Watch

The NBA trade deadline has come and gone, and while the highly anticipated Giannis Antetokounmpo trade didn’t materialize, several surprising moves shook the league. Notable among these are Ivica Zubac heading to the Indiana Pacers, and the Dallas Mavericks trading Anthony Davis to the Wizards for a substantial return. Now that the deadline is over, the focus shifts to the buyout market, where some players who were traded might be waived and become free agents, potentially signing with teams that better suit their current aspirations.

Let’s examine some key players who could become valuable pickups on the buyout market:

Khris Middleton
It remains uncertain if the Mavericks plan to buy out Middleton’s contract. Given Dallas’ direction toward rebuilding and emphasizing young talent like Cooper Flagg, keeping a veteran winger like Middleton—who can still bolster a contender—makes sense. However, reports suggest Dallas might keep both Middleton and Marvin Bagley III through the season, though that could change. If Middleton is bought out, despite his career-low stats and age (34), several teams may still be interested in his two-way versatility. Middleton scored just 10.3 points per 24 minutes this season with the struggling Wizards, but a contender might take a chance on him with a more affordable deal, especially since releasing him would remove the burden of his $33 million owed for the season. A fresh start after consecutive losing seasons could reinvigorate his game.

Mike Conley
Conley was traded to the Bulls, then quickly moved to the Hornets, who waived him, making him an unrestricted free agent. Given Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards’ postgame comments, it seems likely Conley will re-sign with the Timberwolves. Edwards praised Conley’s leadership, hinting at a strong desire for his return. Minnesota traded Conley for salary relief but may bring him back now that they added Ayo Dosunmu. Although 38 years old, Conley’s veteran presence remains vital, and it would be surprising to see him join another team.

Chris Paul
Paul’s past eight months have been a rollercoaster. After re-signing with the Clippers in the summer and announcing retirement at season’s end, Paul was eventually traded to the Raptors who are expected to waive him. At 40 years old and averaging just three points this season, his once stellar career seems to be winding down. Yet, Paul could still contribute to a young team needing veteran guidance, possibly ending his career on a high note with a contender.

Cam Thomas
The Nets’ release of Thomas at the deadline was unexpected, especially since he had declined a qualifying contract in the hope of securing a bigger deal. Though he averages nearly 16 points this season, his shooting efficiency is under 40%, making teams wary. Nevertheless, Thomas’ scoring talent is undeniable, and in the right role, he could be a strong offensive threat off the bench. After already moving to another team post-release, Thomas is eager to showcase his skills and justify a lucrative contract.

Lonzo Ball
Ball’s time in Cleveland didn’t revive his pre-injury form. Once an All-Star and rising star, he has struggled with injuries and a drop in athleticism, leading to a trade to the Jazz, where he’s likely to be waived. Cleveland gave up two second-round picks to trade him, underscoring his diminished value. Still, Ball’s defensive tenacity and playmaking ability remain assets, and a team looking for a low-risk addition to support its playoff push might take a chance on him.

Fan Take:
This bustling buyout market highlights how midseason player movement can shift team dynamics and fuel playoff hopefuls. For basketball fans, these developments showcase the constant evolution of rosters and strategies, proving that impactful talent can emerge even after the trade deadline passes.
