What’s the True Value of the Regional Stallion Market?

Each year, a fresh group of stallions takes to the racetrack, with the best outcome being their final run leading to a new career as a breeding stallion, generating significant earnings for their owners. In Kentucky, stallion trading is a major financial driver for the Thoroughbred industry, bringing substantial initial returns and the possibility of long-term profits through stallion shares and breeding seasons if the horse proves successful.

For example, the Coolmore Partnership acquired breeding rights to Triple Crown champion Justify in 2018 for a record $75 million. They had previously secured American Pharoah, another Triple Crown winner, in early 2015, arranging stud rights when he was just two years old at a base price of $8 million, which later increased to $23.5 million after his award-winning performances. However, a Triple Crown title is not necessary for a lucrative stud deal; MyRacehorse sold the sire rights of Preakness Stakes winner She’s the Gray to Gainesway, initially for $3.5 million, rising to $4.5 million with additional incentives, potentially reaching eight figures if all conditions were met. Another horse from the same organization, champion sprinter Straight No Chaser, was sold to WinStar Farms for $1,312,500. It’s worth noting that not all stallions begin their breeding careers in Kentucky, and terms vary depending on their achievements, lineage, and location.

Local stallion deals, including their financial terms, are usually confidential unless the sale occurs in a public auction. MyRacehorse, however, files their transactions with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to comply with regulations, offering insight into pricing from top Kentucky farms to regional markets. In January 2023, MyRacehorse disclosed in an SEC filing the sale details of multiple Grade 3 winner Tiza Magician, who retired to Milky Way Ranch in Temecula, California, for the forthcoming breeding season. Tiza Magician, a son of Tiznow, was sold for $60,000 to a “third-party breeding farm,” with MyRacehorse receiving $36,000 for 60% ownership. The majority of the owners planned to close their accounts after the funds were distributed, with no ongoing breeding rights included in the agreement.

Comparisons help evaluate thoroughbreds, and Tiza Magician’s sale price may guide others with similar profiles. He earned $741,851 across 25 races, including five wins and notable victories in the Grade 3 Cougar II Handicap and Tokyo City Cup Stakes. He also placed in several other graded stakes races, including a runner-up finish in the 2021 Grade 1 Pacific Classic. As a son of the late Hall of Fame stallion Tiznow, Tiza Magician represented one of the final opportunities to stand a progeny of such a renowned sire. His racing style favored stamina rather than early speed—a quality less favored in the commercial market, where instant results are prized. His major wins came relatively late in his career, and he retired at age five after a dry spell, which can negatively affect sale valuations.

Bred in Kentucky by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Tiza Magician was purchased for $150,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. His dam, Magic Union, is out of graded stakes lineage, connected to notable horses such as French Group 1 winner Silver Fringe and Queen’s Plate winner Sir Dudley Digges. His first foal was a two-year-old in 2026. Later that year, he was sold again to a partnership including Vendetta Racing and will stay at Milky Way Farm with a stud fee of $2,500.
