The Hamilton County (Tenn.) Sheriff’s Office said Friday that former first-round NFL pick Daron Lee was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend. First responders found the unnamed woman Tuesday afternoon; after attempts at life-saving treatment she was pronounced dead, and investigators say initial findings point to a homicide. Lee was taken into custody at the scene and also faces a tampering-with-evidence charge; authorities say more charges could follow as the probe continues. Lee was a standout college linebacker — a second-team All-American who helped win the 2015 College Football Playoff over Ohio State and earned Defensive MVP honors in the Sugar Bowl semifinal against No. 1 Alabama. The New York Jets selected him 20th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. Over three seasons with the Jets he started 36 games (40 appearances) and recorded 241 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, four sacks and three interceptions, though a four-game suspension for a substance-abuse violation in 2018 and the team’s decision not to pick up his fifth-year option limited his time there. He was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019, played in 16 games with two starts, and later faced another four-game suspension in the offseason. Lee’s last NFL action came in 2020 with the Buffalo Bills; he signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021 but was released during training camp.
