Controversial Coach Behind Major Rule Overhaul Steps In Last-Minute to Rescue UFC Bout

On this day in 2020, a fighter who was already set to compete at a UFC event ended up taking a last-minute fight.

While Jon Jones’ legacy may always spark some debate, even if he never steps into the Octagon again, he will be remembered as the widely recognized greatest fighter in UFC history. The only notable blemishes on “Bones'” record are disqualifications and no contests, a level of success few can rival. However, many critics argue that Jones should have a loss on his record due to his contentious victory over Dominick Reyes at UFC 247. That event, which has been controversial since it occurred six years ago, nearly lost its appeal until the UFC managed to execute a remarkable adjustment.

James Krause shifted from coaching duties to fighting just a day before UFC 247. When Antonio Arroyo withdrew from his bout against Trevin Giles the day prior, Krause—who was originally scheduled to face Youssef Zalal in the featherweight opener—stepped in on short notice. Zalal’s coach recommended moving up a weight class for this alternate matchup, and the UFC’s quick rearrangement added significant excitement to the card. Despite losing by a split decision, Krause was awarded a $50,000 Fight of the Night bonus for his performance.

However, Krause’s coaching career took a sharp downturn due to a 2022 gambling scandal. His license was suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), ending his tenure coaching multiple UFC fighters. The controversy escalated after unusual betting behavior was linked to one of his former pupils, Darick Minar, whose fight at UFC Apex raised suspicions following a strange shift in betting odds. Minar also had his license indefinitely suspended after failing to disclose an injury, which affected his status as an underdog. Following these revelations, the UFC barred fighters from the same gym as those involved from competing in the Octagon to avoid conflicts of interest. This scandal led the UFC to implement new rules banning roster members, coaches, and family from betting on matches to uphold the sport’s integrity.

Fan Take:
This story is crucial for fight fans because it highlights both the resilience and vulnerability within the UFC. While last-minute fight swaps showcase the fighters’ dedication and adaptability, the gambling scandal underscores the importance of integrity in preserving the sport’s credibility and future growth.
