Manchester United moved into third place in the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils had to survive an early scare when Maxence Lacroix headed past Senne Lamence just five minutes into the game, but Michael Carrick’s hosts fought a long game to win as Lacroix’s subsequent sending off ultimately gave United a narrow 2-1 victory.
After Bruno Fernandes scored the equalizer from the penalty spot, Benjamin Sesco was the late hero that Carrick and his team sorely needed, as the Slovenian connected with the aforementioned excellent strike from Fernandes to continue their recent run of form in the Champions League chase.
Sesco succeeds again at Manchester United
The 22-year-old started against the Eagles in the Premier League and was rewarded with two goals as an impactful sub against Everton and West Ham United in preparation for the showdown with Oliver Glasner’s side.
Carrick’s decision was also correct. The decisive centre-forward was in the right place at the right time to score the winner and continued to threaten Dean Henderson’s goal throughout.
Achieving this instinctive header means the £66m purchase will take him up to eight strikes a season from just 12 Premier League starts.
Adding to Sesco’s ego, Joshua Zirkzee is starting to seriously worry about where his minutes in the next league games will come from, so the match-winning goal over Henderson means the number 30 now has six goals to his name in his last seven appearances in the top flight.
But it was far from a one-man show as United took all three points against the mighty Eagles.
The Manchester United star is now as irresistible as Sesco.
Sesco will be hoping to firmly maintain his place as United’s starting marksman as the goals continue to come after the close win against Palace.
Similarly, Casemiro will be convinced that there is a concrete starting point in the middle of the park for Carrick’s side, as another calm and assured performance from the Red Devils veteran at one point threatened to drop him out of the first team’s plans completely.
Casemiro’s performance in numbers | |
|---|---|
Play time (minutes) | 90 |
Number of points scored | 0 |
assist | 0 |
touch | 114 |
shot | 3 |
exact path | 76/98 (78%) |
key pass | 1 |
carry | 30 |
loss of ownership | 23 times |
tackle win | 2/4 |
Total number of duels won | 11/13 |
The former Real Madrid midfielder completely dominated the game in the middle, racking up 114 touches before the Brazilian was sent off after an even match.
To add context, the away team’s Daichi Kamata could only accumulate 51 touches, while his partner Adam Wharton, who had been rumored for some time to join United’s Reds, could only muster 30 touches.
Additionally, while No. 19 is known as a classy presence in the center of the park, he gradually showed a grittier side in his matches against Glasner & Co., winning 11 duels.
In comparison, not even the impressive Jaydee Combot at the back for the Eagles, who won just five duels before ending the loss, couldn’t top that amount.
It is remarkable how Casemiro was able to establish himself in Carrick’s starting XI towards the end of his United career. The 34-year-old continues to love every minute of his current spell with the Red Devils until his contract expires.
Casemiro will be leaving United this summer, but that doesn’t mean everything has to be doom and gloom regarding the South American at the Theater of Dreams.
Instead, working alongside Sesco and Carrick, United’s midfield heartthrob will continue to give his all as the Red Devils desperately hope to secure another illustrious Champions League spot.
‘Incalculable’ Manchester United star is modern-day Solskjaer, not Sesco
Benjamin Sesco is moving into super-sub territory, but is he really Man United’s new Solskjær?
