Liverpool have officially announced that they have agreed in principle to sign Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who is highly rated by Austrian side Vienna.

The move still requires international approval, but represents a new strategic deal as the Reds continue to prioritize the acquisition of elite young talent from across the continent.

The club have announced that the defender will remain in Austria for the remainder of this season before joining up with Liverpool’s Under-21 squad in the summer of 2026.

Ndukwe has quickly become one of the most talked about defensive prospects in European football.

The centre-back, currently 17, will turn 18 in March, opening the way for him to move to Merseyside.

Ndukwe’s reputation soared during the 2025 U17 World Cup in Qatar. He was a key part of the Austrian team that reached the final, playing in all but one of the matches that ended in the runners-up to Portugal.

His performances, including a notable goal in the 4-0 win over England, attracted the attention of scouts from several top clubs, including Inter Milan and Bundesliga teams.

At club level, Ndukwe has been a mainstay of Austrian second-division side Vienna’s reserve team, the Young Violets.

His technical composure and physical edge have already seen him integrate into the senior set-up, making nine appearances on the matchday bench this season.

While the deal is a significant milestone for the academy, it is unlikely to bring immediate relief to Arne Slott’s senior team.

Liverpool’s defensive depth has been an issue of late, with Virgil van Dijk turning 35 this year and Ibrahima Konate’s contract situation still a hot topic.

The Reds have also dealt with setbacks in the senior market, including a serious injury to summer signing Giovanni Leoni and the failure to sign Marc Gehi.

Also, in the match against Joe Gomez, he lost Joe Gomez to injury, leaving Ibrahima Konate as the only option alongside Van Dijk.

Liverpool remain linked with Micky van de Ven, a move expected in the summer.

Ndukwe is initially set to join the Under-21 squad, so his arrival would be a long-term “forward-looking” move rather than a January fix to the first team’s current defensive hurdles.

The deal is reportedly worth an initial £2.6m, suggesting Liverpool believe they have secured a world-class talent before his market value explodes. But for now, Anfield fans will have to wait until next season to see the ‘Austrian giant’ in action.
