Bryson DeChambeau’s ’58 form attracts attention at LIV Golf Singapore

Ever the tinkerer, Bryson DeChambeau rose to the top of the leaderboard at LIV Golf Singapore on Thursday, overcoming some hiccups to shoot a 67 at Sentosa Golf Club and share the lead in the opening round. The score was good enough for now, but DeChambeau revealed he was still looking for more.

I don’t mean it in an aesthetic sense. The two-time U.S. Open champion continues to follow the form that once produced one of the most shocking rounds in LIV golf history, firing a record-setting 58 at the Greenbrier for a solo victory. In DeChambeau’s mind, that ceiling is firmly within reach.

He will start the second round in Singapore with a quartet of veterans, sharing the lead with Canada’s Richard T. Lee, England’s Lee Westwood and fellow major champion Jon Rahm, an interesting combination of power, experience and pedigree at the top.

“The conditions were incredibly tricky,” DeChambeau said after the opener. “I was definitely frustrated all day, except at the end. I came in and played well. I hit some shots the way I know how to hit them.”

“I’m trying to get back to the 58 that I had when I hit the 58 at the Greenbrier. I’m concentrating on that and things haven’t set in yet. So I was pretty nervous on some of my tee shots and hit it in stride and hit some fairways.”

“But I really want to get more comfortable on the golf course because my putting was great. I got up and down a lot from some tricky situations and I’m proud of that. That’s how I know how to do it. But it was pretty difficult mentally there.”

Asked if he thought another record-breaking round would soon follow, DeChambeau said he wasn’t sure but felt he was ready.

“I have no idea. I wish I had a better clue. It could come in one stroke of golf. I don’t know. One more swing and we’re really close, that’s what I’m saying. We’re pretty close to figuring out what it is, but we need to adjust the irons a little bit more,” he said.

“There were some shots that I felt like I hit good shots, but they just weren’t the right distance. When that golf swing comes together, I feel like I hit my numbers really well. I just need to work on my golf swing a little bit more. And I think our team is doing pretty well as well. I’m excited to see us move up again to where we should be near the top of the leaderboard.”

DeChambeau’s Crushers GC is in second place at 5 under, while Rahm’s Region XIII got off to an amazing start with team play, with teammates Tyrrell Hutton, Tom McKibbin and Caleb Surratt all under par for the day.
