Giants WR Jaring Hyatt Opens Up About Struggles Behind Significant Offseason Weight Gain

Jaring Hyatt is focused on revitalizing his NFL career after a disappointing 2024 season. The Giants’ third-round pick in 2023, Hyatt significantly increased his weight by about 20 pounds, now weighing approximately 194-195 pounds compared to 170 pounds last year. Despite showing promise during his rookie season, he managed to catch only eight passes across 16 games in 2024. Hyatt attributes the weight gain to his motivation to overcome setbacks and emphasized on a Giants podcast that the adversity he faced has transformed him.

Before being drafted, Hyatt was known for his notable speed, clocking a 4.40-second 40-yard dash at the 2023 Combine, as well as his playmaking ability at Tennessee. In his senior year at Knoxville, he led the SEC with 1,267 receiving yards, averaging 18.9 yards per catch with 15 touchdown receptions. Hyatt hopes his increased size will help him replicate such success in the NFL, asserting that his speed remains intact despite the extra weight. He explained that his added bulk has enhanced his ability to run faster and stronger through contact, addressing a weakness he felt in the previous season.

Additionally, Hyatt has discussed with the Giants’ management about getting more versatile playtime, as he lined up primarily in the wide receiver position for 86% of his snaps last year. He expressed a preference for slot receiver roles where he excelled during his college career.

Fan Take: This update is significant for NFL fans as it shows a young player’s dedication to overcoming adversity and improving his game physically and mentally. Hyatt’s progress could be a key storyline for the Giants and might inspire other players to adapt and grow after challenging seasons, potentially raising the competitive level in the league.
