David Ornstein of The Athletic has rubbished escalating reports that Liverpool are ready to replace Arne Slott with Xabi Alonso, revealing that the club’s hierarchy remain firmly committed to the Dutchman.
Despite a poor defense of the Premier League title this season, with the Reds slipping to 10 league defeats, the internal message from Anfield is for stability rather than passive change.

Michael Edwards remains in touch with Xabi Alonso, according to the latest report from BILD, suggesting the Spaniard could return to Anfield next season in his place in the slot.
But Ornstein has moved to clarify the club’s actual position, suggesting that the “noise” surrounding the change does not reflect the reality within the boardroom.
David Ornstein says Liverpool intend to retain Arne Slott
Speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast (via AnythingLFC_), Ornstein gave an update on Slott’s job security and said the club is actively planning for his future with him at the helm.
Those within the club believe Slot’s sacking is not on the agenda, despite mounting pressure following last weekend’s Premier League defeat.
He said: “Despite reports to the contrary, all our information is that Liverpool are sticking with Arne Slott.
“We are not thinking of changing the manager. They are planning with him and their priority is to give him the profile of a team to be successful.”
Liverpool will make final decision after season ends
Although we fully support the current stance, the pressure remains high as the 2025/26 campaign enters its final stages.
Liverpool currently sit in fifth place, chasing Aston Villa in the race for the final Champions League spot.
He seems to be completely inferior to Slott in terms of weight class, but if he fails to join Europe’s elite competition, it will become increasingly difficult to justify his position in the summer.
With Xabi Alonso reportedly ‘ready’ to return as manager and demanding a say in the team’s plans, the Spaniard’s shadow will continue to loom over Anfield until Slott stabilizes his form on the pitch.
