Manager Arne Slott has explained his decision to replace Joe Gomez during Liverpool’s humiliating 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup.
The defender was sent off in the second half at the Etihad Stadium as the Reds struggled to cope with Erling Haaland’s incredible hat-trick.
The versatile defender was replaced as the Reds struggled to contain Erling Haaland’s rampage as he scored a hat-trick at the Etihad Stadium.
With Liverpool’s season effectively on hold, Slott’s post-match comments shed light on the subtle things he is doing to maintain balance with a team battered by fitness issues.
Arne Slott reveals why he dropped Joe Gomez
Speaking to TNT Sport (via BBC Sport) after the final whistle, Slott explained that the decision was purely tactical and aimed at preserving Gomez for the upcoming Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain.
“I took Joe Gomez out because he’s shown since I’ve been here that it’s not always easy for him to play 90 minutes twice,” Slott admitted. “So if we wanted to use him on Wednesday, it helped to have him out today.”
Slott’s hospitalization highlights growing concerns that senior defenders cannot be relied on to complete 180 minutes of high-intensity football within a four-day window.
Although the substitution was a “precautionary” move, it did little to stem the bleeding on a day when Liverpool’s defensive weaknesses were exposed.
Liverpool’s defensive crisis exposed again
The 4-0 defeat was Slott’s 15th defeat of the season, an impressive figure for a team that won the Premier League trophy just 12 months ago.
The Reds have conceded 46 goals in the Premier League alone this season, with today’s departure taking their total conceded in all competitions to over 60.
Liverpool have lost 15 games across all competitions this season, their most defeats in a single season since 2014-15, when the Reds lost 18 games under Brendan Rodgers.
Arne Slot is under pressure.
With the FA Cup now confirmed and their Premier League title defense in tatters, the focus shifts to Europe.
Liverpool will be heading into the Champions League showdown with PSG with their slots under intense scrutiny.
Fan dissatisfaction reached a boiling point, with some supporters leaving the stadium early and calls for the Dutchman to be sacked.
The club’s leaders now have to decide whether to act immediately or wait until the end of the season before making a decision, but Slott’s future at Anfield is in jeopardy following a downturn in results.
